Abstract: After the completion of implant-supported fixed prostheses, there would be interproximal contact loss (ICL) between implant-supported fixed prostheses and adjacent natural teeth with the passage of time. ICL is the absence of interproximal contact between the implant-supported prostheses and natural teeth or prostheses. The prevalence of ICL is high and its primary cause is mesial migration of natural teeth. ICL can result in food impaction and exert a detrimental influence on the long-term success not only of periodontal tissues and dental implants but also of associated restorations and adjacent teeth. Furthermore, it can adversely affect the health of peri-implant tissues and even lead to implant failure. Consequently, there is growing recognition among clinicians of the importance of managing this condition effectively. This article reviewed the clinical prevalence, causes, prevention and treatment of interproximal contact loss between implant-supported fixed prostheses and adjacent natural teeth, aiming to provide some clinical suggestions.
